1.5.9.6 Apathy Apathy develops rapidly when the student realizes the instructor is inadequately prepared or when the instruction is deficient, contradictory, or appears insincere. To hold the student's interest and to maintain a high level of motivation, well planned, appropriate and accurate instruction must be provided. Even an inexperienced student realizes immediately when the instructor has failed to prepare for the lesson. Spotty coverage, misplaced emphasis, unnecessary repetition, and disorganized presentation can cause the student to lose confidence in the instructor. Poor planning also is evident when instructions are overly explicit and so elementary that they insult a student's intelligence or they are so general the student cannot make sense out of them. To make the experience relevant in the student's eyes, the presentation must be geared to the student's total experience. Poor presentations of instruction may result not only from poor preparation but, also, from distracting mannerisms, personal untidiness, or the appearance of irritation with the student. Flight instructors normally work in rather close quarters and, therefore, should be attentive to those problems emphasized in the deodorant and mouthwash commercials. Chapter 2 INSTRUCTOR – PUPIL
