Flight Data Processing System A system which processes elements of Flight Plan Information for various applications such as flight data strip printing, radar data tag information, billing processes, national defence requirements. The Flight Data Processing System is responsible for collecting and interrogating aircraft position-related data derived from on-board navigation and position fixing systems for presentation to the ATC controllers. FDPS uses this information to then probe for potential conflicts.
Flight Information Information useful for the safe and efficient conduct of flight, including information on air traffic, meteorological conditions, aerodromes conditions, or air route facilities.
Flight Information Centre A unit established to provide flight information service and alerting service. (Ref. ICAO Doc 9569 Definitions).

Tip: to find a specific term, use the Acrobat search : click F on the binocular icon in the window bar menu
Flight Information Region
1- A three-dimensional area in which aircraft are under control of usually a single authority. Internally a FIR is divided into several geographical areas called sectors. Sometimes one or more FIRs have a combined upper area control.
2- An airspace of defined dimensions within which flight information service and alerting service are provided.
Flight Information Service (FIS)
A service provided for the purpose of giving advice and information useful for the safe and
efficient conduct of flights.

Flight Level
A surface of constant atmosphere pressure which is related to a specific pressure datum,
1013.2hPa, and is separated from other such surfaces by specific pressure intervals.

Altitude above sea-level in 100 feet units measured according to a standard atmosphere. Strictly speaking a flight level is an indication of pressure, not of altitude. Only above the transition level (which depends on the local QNH but is typically 4000 feet above sea level) flight levels are used to indicate altitude, below the transition level feet are used.
Flight Level Allocation Scheme
The scheme whereby specific flight levels may be assigned to specific route Flight Management System is an integrated system, consisting of airborne sensor, receiver and computer with both navigation and aircraft performance data bases, which provides performance and RNAV guidance to a display and automatic flight control system.
Flight Management Computer
A computer system that uses a large data base to allow routes to be pre-programmed and fed into the system by news of a data loader. The system is constantly updated with respect to position accuracy by reference to conventional navigation aids. The sophisticated program and its associated data base ensure that the most appropriate aids are automatically selected during the information update cycle.
Flight Management System
The FMS is an on-board multi-purpose navigation, performance, and aircraft operations (database) computer designed to provide virtual data and operational harmony between closed and open elements associated with a flight from pre-engine start and take-off, to landing and engine shut-down. Capable of receiving, storing and sending information via both air to air and air to ground, FMS technology (as it evolves) represents a vital element within the future air navigation, communications and surveillance / Air Traffic Management System (CNS/ATM) for promoting increased safety, better co-ordination and improved efficiency.
