Automatic Direction Finding System
One of the earliest and most primitive navigation aids, ADF uses UHF signals transmitted from Non-directional Beacons to guide aircraft along a predetermined track from station to station. Due to their low range and susceptibility to atmospheric disturbances, reliance on ADF for primary navigation has long given way to VOR, LORAN and GPS. However, NDBs are still used as fixes for instrument approaches but not primary sources of navigation; except for sparsely populated areas in North America and developing countries. Further implementation of GNSS will eventually phase out ADF/NDBs.

Automatic Flight Control System The Automatic Flight Control System (AFCS) receives sensor information from the Air Data System (see ADC), Navigation System, Attitude Heading Reference System, Radio Altimeter and Actuator Position Sensors. Dependent upon crew MCS mode selection, the AWS either automatically moves and controls the aircraft's flight surfaces or commands the flight crew to follow cues transmitted to the flight director (FD) on the position flight display on EM equipped aircraft (see EFIS).
Automatic Processing The type of cognitive processing that requires little or no conscious attention or thought. Automatically-processed tasks are done rapidly and with little or no effort. Not all tasks are amenable to automatic processing. Automatic Terminal Information Service Provision of current, routine information to arriving and departing aircraft by means of continuous and repetitive broadcasts throughout the day or a specified portion of the day. Automatic Weather Observing System Installed and in use at many airports (mainly in the US and Canada), AWOS replaces and/or supplements existing voice recorded (see ATIS) weather reporting systems with a computer digitised voice recording transmitted on VHF. Unlike conventional methods of weather reporting, AWOS is fully automated and is rapidly and continuously updated as wind, sky and visibility conditions change. Automatically An event identified by the system without any manual action by the controller or aircrew. Automation accuracy Accuracy of machine in supporting successful completion of tasks. Automation confidence Confidence in ability of the machine to support successfully completion of the tasks. Automation dependability The extent to which you can count on the machine to provide the appropriate support to the tasks. Automation reliability The extent to which you can rely on the machine to consistently support the tasks.
