This document sets forth minimum requirements, and describes the various elements of TCAS 1. Discussed both passive and active TCAS 1 applications. Provides the minimum performance requirements for electromagnetic compatibility for an active TCAS 1 and test procedures for both active and passive systems. Appendix A addresses cross-link advisories.

RTCA Document 185, Minimum Operational Performance Standards for Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) Airborne Equipment, Consolidated Edition, Issued 8/90. Volume 1 sets forth operational goals and applications and recommends standards and test procedures for airborne traffic alert and collision avoidance equipment intended primarily for use on transport category aircraft. It includes test conditions and procedures for ensuring installed equipment performance. This baseline TCAS is described as having omni-directional interrogation/reception capability. Additional features are described which will provide sectorised interrogations; for operations in higher density airspace and, separately, will provide bearing estimation measurements. When all features are included, the system will meet FAA Minimum TCAS II requirements for collision avoidance. Volume II contains the required collision avoidance algorithms. The algorithms are presented as high-level pseudo code to serve as detailed specification. Co-ordinated with EUROCAE.
