TMC (thrust management computer). A component in the flight management system of a jet transport aircraft that senses the engine parameters and power requests and controls the thrust produced by the engines. toe-in (airplane wheel alignment). The wheels of an airplane are toed in if lines drawn through the center of the two wheels, perpendicular to the axles, cross ahead of the wheels. As the airplane moves forward, toe-in causes the wheels to try to move closer together. toe-out (airplane wheel alignment). The wheels of an airplane are toed out if lines drawn through the center of the two wheels, perpendicular to the axles, cross behind the wheels. As the airplane moves forward, toe-out causes the wheels to try to move farther apart. To-From indicator (electronic navigation system component). An indicator used in aerial navigation with the VOR, very-high-frequency omnirange navigation system. The To-From indicator shows the pilot whether the aircraft is flying toward or away from the station if it is flying at the heading shown on the omni bearing selector (OBS). When an aircraft passes over a VOR antenna, the To-From indicator changes from To to From. toggle (noun). A T-shaped handle fitted onto the end of a cable that is used to move some mechanical device. toggle (verb). To alternate between two or more circuit configurations, normally by the operation of a single switch. toggle flip-flop. A digital building block that changes the logic state of its output each time a clock pulse is received. toggle switch. An electrical switch with a control handle in the form of a bat, or lever, sticking out of the front of the switch. It is customary when installing a toggle switch to move the toggle up to turn the switch ON, and down to turn the switch OFF. tolerance (dimensions). The difference between the extreme allowable dimensions of a part. toluene. A liquid hydrocarbon material much like benzene, but less flammable. Toluene is used as a mass. ton of refrigeration. A measure of the cooling effect of an air conditioning system. One ton of reciprocating engine. A top overhaul does not include opening the crankcase or removing the connecting rods from the crankshaft. |
