final approach course (aircraft flight operation). A straight-line extension of a localizer, a final approach radial, or a runway center line, all without regard to distance.
final approach fix. See FAF.
final approach-IFR (air traffic control). The flight path of an aircraft which is inbound to an airport on a final instrument approach course, beginning at the final approach fix or point, and extending to the airport or the point where a circle-to-land maneuver or a missed approach is executed.
final approach point. See FAP.
final controller (air traffic control). The controller providing information and final approach guidance during precision approach radar (PAR) and airport surveillance radar (ASR) approaches utilizing radar equipment.
final monitor aid (air traffic control). A high-resolution color display that is equipped with the controller-alert system hardware/software which is used in the precision runway monitor (PRM) system.
The display includes alert algorithms providing the target predictors, a color-change alert when a target penetrates or is predicted to penetrate the no transgression zone (NTZ), a color-change alert if the aircraft transponder becomes inoperative, synthesized voice alerts, digital mapping, and like features contained in the precision runway monitoring (PRM) system.
fineness ratio. The ratio of the length of a streamlined body to its maximum diameter.
fine-wire spark plug (aircraft reciprocating engine component). A type of spark plug used in aircraft engines that have problems with lead fouling the plugs. The electrodes are made of small-diameter platinum or iridium wire which leaves the firing end of the spark plug open so the gases inside the cylinder can scavenge the lead compounds before they solidify and foul the plug.

finger brake (sheet metal shop tool). Another term for a box brake. See box brake.
finger patch (welded structural repair). A type of patch welded over a cluster in a welded truss-type aircraft fuselage. The patch covers and reinforces damaged areas of the tubes and has fingers that extend out along each of the tubes in the cluster.
finger screen (fuel system filter). A coarse-mesh, small-diameter screen made in the shape of a finger. A finger screen is installed in the end of the outlet line inside a fuel tank to prevent large contaminants from restricting the flow of fuel from the tank.
Small contaminants and water that pass through the finger screen are trapped in finer screens and filters further along in the fuel system.
finishing tape. Another name for surface tape. See surface tape.
finish turning (metal machining). A step in the machining of a metal part in which the part is turned to its correct dimension and given its final smoothness.
FIR (flight information region). An airspace of defined dimensions within which flight information service and alerting service are provided.
fire detection system (aircraft fire warning system). A system in an aircraft that warns the flight crew of the presence of a fire in any of the engines, the cargo area, or the wheel wells.
