erbium. A soft, malleable, silvery, rare-earth chemical element. Erbium’s symbol is Er, its atomic number is 68, and its atomic weight is 167.26. Erbium is used in metallurgy and nuclear research.
erosion. The process in which a material is worn away by a scraping or abrading action.
escape velocity. The speed a flight vehicle must reach in order to escape from the gravitational field of the earth. The escape velocity on the earth is about seven miles per second.
Because of the smaller gravitational field on Mars, a vehicle leaving Mars would have an escape velocity of only slightly more than three miles per second.
ESFC (equivalent specific fuel consumption). A measure of the efficiency of a turboprop engine. It is the number of pounds of fuel burned per hour to produce one equivalent shaft horsepower (ESHP) and is found by dividing the fuel flow, in pounds per hour, by the ESHP.
ESHP (equivalent shaft horsepower). A measure of the power produced by a turboprop engine. ESHP is the sum of the shaft horsepower delivered to the propeller and the thrust horsepower produced by the exhaust gas. The approximate amount of thrust horsepower can be found by dividing the static thrust by
2.6.
established (air traffic control). To be stable or fixed on a route, route segment, altitude, heading, etc.
estimated ceiling (meteorology). A ceiling classification applied when the ceiling height has been estimated by the observer. The term estimated also applies when the ceiling has been determined by some other method, but because of the specified limits of time, distance, or precipitation conditions, a more descriptive classification cannot be applied.
estimated elapsed time (ICAO). The estimated time required to proceed from one significant point to another.
estimated off-block time (ICAO). The estimated time at which the aircraft will commence movement associated with departure.
estimated time en route. See ETE.

estimated time of arrival. See ETA.
ETA (estimated time of arrival) (air traffic control). The time the flight is estimated to arrive at the gate, for scheduled operators, or at the actual runway for nonscheduled operators.
etch. To chemically eat away part of a material. The surface of clad aluminum alloy sheet must be etched to microscopically roughen it before it is painted so the primer can bond tightly to it.
ETE (estimated time en route) (air traffic control). The estimated flying time from departure point to destination (lift-off to touchdown).
ethanol. Alcohol made from cereal grains such as corn.
ether. A volatile, highly flammable liquid that may be used to prime the cylinders of an aircraft engine for starting under extremely cold conditions.
ethylene dibromide. A colorless poisonous liquid, BrCH2CH2Br, added to aviation gasoline to minimize lead fouling of the spark plugs. Tetraethyl lead improves the antidetonation characteristics of aviation gasoline, but it leaves lead deposits inside the spark plugs. Ethylene dibromide combines with the lead before it solidifies and changes it into volatile lead bromides, which pass out with the exhaust gases.
