contrail. The long visible trail resembling a cloud left behind some airplanes as they fly at high altitude. Contrails form when water vapor from the hot engine exhausts condense and freeze into tiny ice crystals. These crystals reflect light from the sun and form the visible track across the sky. contrarotating. Rotating in opposite directions. contrarotating propellers. Two propellers mounted on concentric shafts and turning in opposite directions. The two propellers are driven by either a single engine or two engines coupled together, and their opposite rotation counteracts the effect of torque caused by the engines driving the propellers. control. A mechanism or system used to regulate or guide the operation of a machine or organization. control area (air traffic control). Airspace designated as Colored Federal Airways, VOR Federal Airways, control areas associated with jet routes outside the continental control area (14 CFR 71.161), additional control areas (14 CFR 71.163), control area extensions (14 CFR 71.165), and area low routes. Control areas do not include the continental control area, but unless otherwise designated, they do include the airspace between a segment of a main VOR Federal Airway and its associated alternate segments, with the vertical extent of the area corresponding to the vertical extent of the related segment of the main airway. control cable (aircraft control system component). An electrical circuit used to control other circuits in an electrical device or system. Control circuits include sensors and measuring devices. The output current in a control circuit is low, usually just enough to actuate the devices that control the main load current of the device or system. control column (airplane control system). The control in the cockpit of an airplane on which the control wheel is mounted. Rotation of the control wheel operates the ailerons, and back-and-forth movement of the control column moves the elevators up or down. Control Display Unit. See CDU. control grid (electron tube component). The grid in an electron tube to which the signal to be amplified is applied. The voltage on the control grid controls the amount of electron flow allowed between the cathode and the anode, or plate, of the tube. control horn (aircraft control system component). The arm on a control surface to which the control cable or push-pull rod attaches to move the surface. controllability. The characteristic of an aircraft that allows it to change its flight attitude in response to the pilot’s movement of the cockpit controls. controllable-pitch propeller (aircraft propeller). A propeller whose blade pitch angle can be changed in flight. Takeoff is made with a low blade angle (low pitch) that allows the engine to develop its maximum power. |
